The cardioid + figure-8 pattern set makes it directly usable for Blumlein and mid-side (M/S) arrays as well as X/Y and spaced-pair techniques.
Not for Anyone who needs an omnidirectional pattern for stereo work — the U48 offers cardioid and figure-8 only, whereas Telefunken's U47 pairs cardioid with omni. Also skip if you need phantom-powered, grab-and-go mics: each U48 requires the dedicated external power supply and special 10 m tube cable, and each mic weighs 620 g at 240 mm long. Buyers who only ever record mono sources are paying for matching they won't use.

The TELEFUNKEN U48 Stereo Set is a matched pair of U48 large-diaphragm vacuum tube condenser microphones intended for stereo recording. Each U48 uses TELEFUNKEN's historically accurate M7 center-terminated capsule, VF14K vacuum tube, and BV8 output transformer, and offers two polar patterns: cardioid and figure-8. Components in the two microphones are hand-selected, with capsules tuned to each other and transformers and tubes tested for matched gain and frequency response, supporting techniques such as X/Y, A/B spaced pair, Blumlein, and mid-side (M/S). The set includes an M 940HS dual power supply that powers both microphones, two 10 m Sommer M 840TH tube microphone cables, two M 740 shock mounts, two WB40 wooden boxes, and an FC40S locking flight case.
