The three switchable patterns per mic support X/Y (cardioid), A/B spaced pairs (cardioid or omni), Blumlein (both in figure-8), and M/S (cardioid + figure-8) techniques, and each mic also serves as a first-call tube vocal microphone.
Not for Anyone who only needs a single vocal microphone — the mono ELA M 251E system exists and includes the same mic with its own power supply, cable, shock mount, and cases. Also a poor fit for phantom-power-only or mobile/location rigs: these are tube microphones that require the external M 950ES power supply and mains power, not 48V phantom.

The TELEFUNKEN ELA M 251 E Stereo Set is a factory-matched pair of ELA M 251E large-diaphragm vacuum-tube condenser microphones. Each microphone uses an edge-terminated CK12 capsule, a 6072A dual-triode vacuum tube, and a Haufe T14/1 output transformer, with switchable cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure-8 polar patterns. Components are hand-selected, with capsules tuned to each other and transformers and tubes tested for matched gain and frequency response between the two microphones. The set includes an M 950ES dual power supply that powers both microphones at once, two M850E tube-microphone cables, two WB50 wooden boxes, and a locking stereo flight case. Each microphone covers 20 Hz to 20 kHz (plus or minus 3 dB), with 17 mV/Pa sensitivity, 200 ohm output impedance, and 130 dB maximum SPL at 1% THD.
