Both microphones are built around TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik's M7 capsule, VF14K vacuum tube, and BV8 output transformer; the U47 provides cardioid and omnidirectional polar patterns, while the U48 provides cardioid and figure-8. The complementary pattern sets allow stereo techniques including X/Y coincident pairs, A/B spaced pairs, and mid/side recording.
