Description
Offered here is a beautiful and fully serviced AKAI GX-635D, one of the most desirable open-reel decks from Akai's classic late-1970s lineup. This unit has just been professionally serviced and calibrated by Vic at Wiktor Amps (March 2026) and is performing to — and in several areas exceeding — original factory specifications.
The GX-635D is well known among tape enthusiasts for its extremely durable GX glass-ferrite heads, excellent frequency response, and refined transport. With proper servicing these machines remain superb performers for playback, tape archiving, or home recording.
Professional Service – March 2026
Service was completed by Wiktor Amps, a respected technician experienced with vintage reel-to-reel equipment.
Work performed includes:
- Transport calibrated to original manufacturer specification
- Speed verified and adjusted
- Head alignment performed
- Record and playback electronics calibrated
- Output level calibrated (0 VU set to 0.775V / dBm, output control reference position "8")
- Playback level calibrated to 185 nWb/m, period-correct reference level
- Record section calibrated for Quantegy 456 tape formulation
- Known-issue transistors replaced with proper substitute components
- Electrolytic capacitors in the input preamp replaced
Bench testing confirms:
- Flat response to 15 kHz
- Near-flat response approaching 20 kHz
- Performance exceeding original manufacturer specifications
Glass ferrite heads show no visible wear, suggesting comparatively low lifetime use.
Condition
This GX-635D is in excellent working condition and has just been tested extensively on the technician's bench.
