Description
AEA R84 and Cloudlifter CL-Z
Lovely-sounding mic. Amazing on strings, horns/woodwinds, acoustic guitar, drum overheads/room. Always stored vertically in its case.
I can knock off $200 CAD if you don't want the Cloudlifter. It really opens up this mic and helps clear out some of the boominess that most ribbon mics have. Once I got this CL-Z I didn't use this mic without it aside from occasionally on drums.
There is an extremely minor indentation on the front side of the grill (pic 3), which I can't account for and is the only reason I'm rating it as very good instead of excellent. I've never opened it up or had any repairs done and I've used other R84s and can attest that this mic sounds as it should.
I can email you a couple quick raw acoustic guitar samples I just recorded with and without the Cloudlifter if you're interested.
What Cloud Microphones says about the CL-Z:
Shape your sound with the Cloudlifter CL-Z. This mic activator with Vari-Z impedance control allows you to fine-tune your tone like never before. With up to +25dB of clean gain, a switchable attenuator, and a high-pass filter, the CL-Z gives you complete control over your sound, from subtle warmth to crystal-clear articulation. It's the perfect tool for any creator who demands the ultimate in sonic flexibility.
The CL-Z features a continuously variable impedance control, allowing you to seamlessly adjust the impedance between 150 and 15k ohms. This innovative feature lets you optimize your microphone's performance by matching or creatively mismatching its output impedance to your preamplifier. Experiment with different settings to discover new sonic textures, from subtle warmth and presence to airy openness and clarity.
• Exceptional clarity and detail: Provides up to +25dB of clean gain to low-output microphones, revealing subtle nuances and enhancing overall audio quality.
• Unprecedented tonal control: The Vari-Z knob allows you to fine-tune your sound by adjusting the impedance relationship between your microphone and preamp.
• Versatile gain shaping: Features a switchable attenuator to reduce the output gain to +12dB, providing flexibility for louder sources or achieving a "colored" sound.
• Integrated high-pass filter: Includes a variable high-pass filter that works in tandem with the Vari-Z knob to tame unwanted low frequencies.
• Plug-and-play simplicity: Simply connect it between your microphone and preamp – no batteries or external power supplies required.
• Safe for all microphones: Works with any passive microphone, including ribbon mics, without passing phantom power.
